does the japan modem work with american gamecube

the hardware (modem, controller, etc)should work just fine, but i dont know about the HL stuff yet, best bet is to wait till it comes out to see....

The only people I've heard that have the trial and imported are using JAPANESE consoles. So it would be hard for anyone to know...

Same goes for the HL bit. The game's not even out yet and the trial is free online.
