"l33tspeak" isn't just a lame attempt to be cool. It actually came into existence when hackers and software pirates found that they needed a fairly simple form of encryption to get around scans for keywords on IRC networks. The FBI was prepared to catch keywords such as "warez" but they weren't prepared to catch keywords like "w4r3z" or "vv4r3z". It is, in fact, functional.
