OpenOffice is a good alternative but the spell checker in it makes Word look like a collegiate dictionary.

Yeah, word is awful - I switched to Openoffice and online thesauruses, and it makes writing a helluva lot easier. It actually obeys you when you try to put text in a specific place, or use pictures.
