go to gamestop, get a used ps2 slim. you have 30 days to return it if something goes wrong on you (and with what i've dealt with, chances are, it will). so if it does, go back, exhange, rinse repeat until satisfied.

My copy of PSU had not left my PS2 since the week after launch; yes, mine was delayed. At some point it stopped reading and I opened the cover and guess what? A thin layer of dust had collected on the inside and was stuck to everything. A good wipe and can of air did the trick. Wish I could say that would work for yours

I have a very early model PS2 (big daddy) and never cleaned it, left the sucker on for days at a time, had it fall off the shelf a couple of times, and have had ppl kick / knock it around since being moved to the floor.

It's been used and abused, but just keeps going. (like a bi-polar ADS student with a dominatrix fetish) On the other hand, the slim model, which I babied, lasted me around 7 months.

You can get the PS2 professionally cleaned/fixed fairly cheaply. Just call Sony repairs/warranty, explain the problem and they should be able to give you directions.
