I don't think it really is anything big, or that bad. I don't see the appeal in the 2DS at all, but it can be for people who completely avoided the 3DS just because of the 3D. Yep, you can turn it off and it's optional, but you'll be surprised how many people I've seen, and how many in forums, would swear not to buy a 3D thing just because it has the option for 3D.
As for me, the 3D works. Not for every game, but they did a pretty good job in some games, IMO. Outside of some games actually taking good advantage of the extra depth perception it provides, it is gimmicky. But it never really got in the way of good game design, so I don't see why not. Sometimes, it actually drew me in quite well. Even the Castlevania game, though it's gameplay was a little different, definitely drew me in with some of the way the particles came out conveying season and the environment. I almost mentally felt I was in that environment, a bit, at times.
