You'll want a dedicated memory card anyway, Sakai mentioned that when the PC version was 8GB in size, the Vita was about half the size at 4GB. Then there's the mandatory 1GB update. You'll also need to consider future updates and their size.

How often are the updates? 8 gig should hold me till i get 16 or 32 here in a week or two?

Basically every month with minor updates throughout. Major updates could be new areas, new bosses(such as the Chrome Dragon), story, and etc. At the very least, clothing updates.

12 of the files are are only like 800KB, so I think it's probably some sort of DLC or whatever.

We actually are. One of them is 3GB with a 1GB update.. So..
