That's pretty much the whole point. You don't get to keep anything you get in the Challenge Quests, but you're rewarded with Challenge Miles you can use to buy stuff outside of CM.
EDIT: I don't know how Challenge Mode was in PSO1, but in PSO2 there's also intermissions where you can trade stuff you got for other items, but again, you don't get to keep any of it after the challenge quest is over.

Nyau is definitely male, considering he's from the original Phantasy Star, where if I remember correctly he was referred to as a male.
Nyau is based on Myau, but the creators have stated they are not the same character.
That said, yeah Nyau is definitely male considering he wears a male ARKS uniform as CeremoNyau.

Adding to this, Nyau is definetly a young male. Heck, Sega started throwing in the AC scratch a few accessories/mag themed on a pink female of his specie recently.
